Geriatric Assessment, Treatment and Recovery in Disasters and Emergencies

Description: This 1.5 hour program, presented by Area Health Education Center of Southern Nevada, is designed for physicians, nurses, EMTs, psychologists, pharmacists and other health care practitioners.  This program will enable health care professionals to increase confidence and competence in carrying out emergency response activities appropriate and sensitive to geriatric populations and their caregivers.  At the conclusion, participants will be able to:·         Identify the predisposing and precipitating factors of geriatric syndromes;·         Recognize the specific vulnerabilities of geriatric patients during times of crisis and disaster;·         Identify necessary personnel, equipment and infrastructure for geriatric disaster preparedness;·         Identify special considerations in triage, treatment and evacuation of geriatric patients;·         Describe the clinical manifestations and treatment of acute geriatric medical emergencies;·         Address the ethical issues that surround the treatment of vulnerable elders during a disaster;·         Identify key elements for designing an exercise for elderly victims of disasters; and·         Incorporate lessons learned into new and updated plans, treatments, preparedness, procedures, response and recovery.
